Prof Khurshaid flays US army official statement

ISLAMABAD: Senator Prof. Khurshid Ahmad, Naib Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Friday expressed serious concern over the statement of US Central Command Chief, Admiral William Fallon stipulating that the real threat to Pakistan is not from India but from the so-called Al-Qaeeda and Taliban.
This is a highly flawed and twisted concept, serving the interests of India and USA and not Pakistan, he said in a statement. He said that India, who illegally occupied Kashmir, has a hand in all major attempts at destabilizing Pakistan, has over a dozen consulates in Afghanistan are engineering internal discontentment in the country.

He said that General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf’s policies have turned Pakistan’s friends into foes. He said that today Pakistani forces are engaged in a fight against its own people, and argued that Pakistan’s active involvement in America’s war in Afghanistan is not a source of strength at all but “a recipe for disaster.”Prof. Kurshid Ahmad demanded that Pervez Musharraf’s failed policies must be reviewed and discarded so that a new peaceful equation could be built in the Tribal Areas. These tribes have been the defenders of Pakistan and have never posed any threat to our security, he added.

The people of Pakistan, he said, wanted good relations with India but only on the basis of equality, justice and honor and above all equitable resolution of the Kashmir dispute, to the satisfaction of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He also pointed out that Indian Israel cooperation is posing a new threat to Pakistan’s security. He referred, in particular, to the recent launching of the Israeli spy satellite by India primarily to monitor Pakistan and Iran and to focus on our nuclear assets.

“Rulers may turned blind eye to these threats but the Pakistani nation and Pakistan Army cannot close their eyes to such dangers,” he said. He expressed the hope that Senate should take up this issue and suggest policy initiative that may “bring the country out of quagmire.”-SANA
